More than once in your life, you will be hurt by someone’s words or actions.
Perhaps someone cut you off while you’re queuing to pay for your lunch. Perhaps a friend has betrayed you. Probably, someone told you that you’re not good enough for them. Or perhaps when you were little you’ve experienced abuse at the hands of adults who were supposed to take care of you and keep you safe.
Many of us carry the pain of these incidents years after they happened. They fester within you, creating resentment and bitterness.
The writer Anne Lamott described holding a grudge as “drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.”
It is such a heavy burden to carry and can cost you your own health and happiness. It is more harmful to you than to the offender.
Despite this, people often take forgiveness for granted. They declare that they forgive people but still carry grudges for those who have “wronged” them. These people are not really free. They are prisoners of their own bitterness.
But what is forgiveness? Moreover, how do we forgive?
People have different definitions of forgiveness. Generally speaking, it is when you choose to let go of bitterness, anger, and resentment you feel towards those who treated you unfairly. It is not condoning or excusing the wrongdoing done to you.
The positive benefits of forgiveness on your mental and physical health include the following:
So, knowing these benefits, how do we forgive those who wronged us?

Through this, you will attain true freedom.

Great post!
I’ve also found a simplistic way of forgiving others and moving on whenever someone offends me in some way.
Here’s what I do.
So for example if someone raises their voice at me because they’re stressed about something, I’ll say to myself, “they’re going through a tough time”.
Being emphatetic towards others makes us more likely to forgive and forget.
Because we’re able to imagine things from the other person’s perspective.
So the next time we get upset over something that someone did to us, think about the other person first!
Thanks for this article, Steve. The quote ‘’“Forgive others not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace.” resonate with me the most. What do you think about the idea of forgiving others without including them in your life anymore?
Depending on what has been done, that can sometimes be the best thing. I have people who I have forgiven, yet I will never, “forget” what was done. Sometimes forgiveness is more about getting the anger and animosity out of YOUR system so you can move on and not about the others.
